Rain Spoils India vs New Zealand 1st Semi-Final - Who is in a Better Position to Qualify For Final?
The 1st semifinal match between India and New Zealand is interrupted due to rain and has been postponed to the reserve day. Heavy rain started at the end of the New Zealand Innings with just 23 balls to go giving some respite for the New Zealanders after they struggled to score runs against India Bowlers thanks to a tight spell by Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They lost the momentum further after losing wickets in regular intervals.
India VS New Zealand Match Summary
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain straight away decided to bat first. Indian captain Virat Kohli also has said that he would have batted first if he won the toss. Martin Guptill’s woeful form continued as yet again he failed with his bat adding just 1 run to his name out of 14 deliveries faced before losing his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah’s fast delivery and was caught in the slip by Virat Kohli.
Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson joined together and played sensible innings to recover from the early damage with a partnership of 69, but the partnership between these two didn’t last long. Ravindra Jadeja got a breakthrough and picked up the wicket of Henry Nicholls when he was on 28.
India bowlers added pressure on New Zealand Team by bowling too many dot balls. New Zealand batsmen struggled against Indian Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal getting a huge turn and bounce from the surface. James Neesham got out cheaply on 12 runs followed by Colin de Grandhomme who has lost his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar when he was on 16 runs.
Somehow Kane Williamson and Toss Taylor fifties helped them to reach a decent total on the board. The rain started with New Zealand having scored 211 for the loss of 5 wickets on 47th over. Still, 23 more deliveries to go in the New Zealand Innings but out of that 23, 12 deliveries will be bowled by Jasprit Bumrah which will be critical. Ross Taylor is still there with an unbeaten 67 and he may help to add some quick runs to the New Zealand scoreboard when the game resumes.
Chance of Rain on Second Day
The Wednesday forecast is not in favour of the match. There is a high chance of rain compared to the previous day. So, It will be doubtful for the semifinal to be recontinued.
If the Match Restarted With DLS Consideration - What Will be the Target for India?
Too many possibilities are there when DLS(Duckworth-Lewis scenarios) method comes into play. If the rain continues today and New Zealand don’t get the chance to bat then DLS Method starts to play its role with the following targets.
What Will Happen - If Match is Washed Out:
If the match is washed out due to rain then India directly qualifies for the final. Because India ended up in the 1st position of the points table during the league stage while New Zealand finished at 4th position in the points table. As per the rule “Between the team who stays on top of the league table will be qualified on this scenario”. If this happens then India will play in the final against the winning team of 2nd Semi-Final (Australia or England) at Lord’s, London on July 14th(Sunday).
